This page has been created to demonstrate how we can utilize resources to study one ELA CCSS standard, view a video of classroom strategies teaching the identified standard and then analyze a sample assessment, as well as, view student products demonstrating proficiency of the standard. These resources have been gathered from various websites throughout the country.

Standard: 10.RL.4 (Reading: Literature)  Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in the text, including figurative and connotative meanings; analyze the impact of specific word choices on meaning and tone, including words with multiple meanings or language that is particularly fresh, engaging, or beautiful. (Include Shakespeare as well as other authors.)

The Teacher Channel Video: Below is an example of a classroom teacher demonstrating a lesson using the pinwheel discussion strategy. This strategy demonstrates how role-playing promotes more rigurous discussion.
